Detailed mechanical, electrical and public health engineering services design for the refurbishment of the existing buildings at Astley, Byrom and Cooper (ABC) Buildings, Quay Street, Manchester

Description

  • Full refurbishment and complete replacement of all building services

  • Astley is a 10 storey tower and Byrom is a 6 storey tower, with Cooper Building as a podium which provides retail/leisure space at ground and first floor

  • Buildings brought back into use after previously being earmarked for demolition

  • Remodelled as office accommodation, provided with underfloor air conditioning

  • Cooper building transformed to house a cinema, gym and coffee shop as well as entrance receptions for Astley and Byrom

  • Roof converted into new event space to provide occupiers with usable function space and roof terraces

Duties

 

Full detailed design for mechanical, electrical and public health services; utilities procurement; tender appraisal; construction phase monitoring; witnessing of commissioning and full involvement with the handover programmes at practical completion.

ABC buildings were designed by architectural practice Leach Rhodes Walker and built in three stages between 1959 to 1965. Scheme is part of the £1.35bn Enterprise City masterplan for St. John’s in Manchester. Project was completed in February 2020.
